Deconstruction of Insidious Poster;

Here we decided to include a popular horror. We included the film trailer for this horror, therefore we thought it would be best to link the two together. This movie poster is for a modern horror, that is quite popular.

The first image I have sectioned is off the main character in the story. This seems to occur often in movie posters. This is a way of introducing th character to the audience, so that they have something to go on when they watch the film. In this image the character is in very dark surroundings which adds a scary feel to the poster, which is often seen in the genre of horror.  Also the character is wearing red which is often associated with evil, blood and death; which are popular themes in a horror.  In this image the characters pupils have been darkened this really makes them stand out due to the contrast of the white in the eye. Also if you look closely at the eyes you can see that they are bloodshot which adds discomfort to the piece, linking it to the genre and the discomfort seen in the film trailer. In the eyes there are two words: ‘insidious is’. This statement adds mystery to the poster as it is a unfinished sentence and will draw the audience to watch the film to complete it. Also the expression in the characters face is very serious and severe, which gives the viewer a feel of what the film is going to be like.

The second part of the poster that I have focused on is the title. Surrounding the title is information that may help persuade the audience, like what different films the makers have done. The films shown are of a similar genre and they are popular films that the audience will recognise. The text is the same in this section and the poster. However the title is written vertically down. This is to make it stand out to the viewer, helping it easier for the viewer to remember it.  The font is in white to make it a strong contrast to the black background, making it more visually striking and illegible to most of the audience. The word ‘is’ is in red in the title to make it stand out from the rest, also red represents blood which is often in horrors. This matches the words in the eyes.

The third image is of the small phrase at the bottom of the title: ‘ it’s not that the house that’s haunted’. This is a phrase that occurs in the film as you can see in the film trailer. Also it creates suspense and dram, to the poster making the viewer feel inclined to watch it. The phrase is quite unusual and is a statement that sets up the story in the film. The font is the same as the title to add consistency. The phrase has been written next to the title, to show that it is important, but because it is smaller and at the bottom of the title it hints the idea that it is less important in comparison to the title.

The fourth section is from right at the bottom of the movie poster. This writing is a lot thinner making it appear a bit blurred. Also it is at the bottom of the poster as it is less important. This text will include who acted in the film and who helped produce the film. Then beneath that its shows the co-operations logo’s, these co-operations would have helped create the film in some way. Then in the centre of the age is the release date: ‘ In theatres everywhere April 1’. The centre and boldness is similar to the previous poster. Therefore it is something w will include in our own.  However in this one it includes the words : ‘in theatres everywhere’, this just shows the popularity and want of the film.
Overall this poster is quite similar to that of Shutter Islands movie poster, this is due to the darkness of the poster and its surroundings. Also it is similar to both previous posters as it shows in each the main character as the main image to the poster. This imagery seems to work well in the movie poster, therefore it will be a strong consideration in what image we use in our movie poster.
