Deconstruction of Shutter Island Movie Poster:

Here we decided that it would be best to create a deconstruction of four different movie posters this was to help us plan our own. Also to help us understand what is important to include and what is often seen, so that we do no miss any important details.

We decided to include the same movie posters as our film trailer deconstructions; this is to add a consistency to our work.

In this movie poster the most striking image is that of the main character. Therefore introducing the character. Also having an image of the character may persuade some people to watch it as they like the actor himself: Leonardo DiCapro. The image has been cleverly edited too mimic the genre the darkness is represented  by using a black and white effect of the face, apart from the eyes that are the bright blue, making them really stand out. Therefore they are able to give a strong expression. The other thing in this image that is in a bright colour is the match. This is to give the illusion of the match being striking and dangerous which links well into the genre. Also there is a phrase in this part of the poster saying: “someone is missing”. This statement adds confusion to the poster which mimics the genre and can also be seen in the characters face. Also the character seems to be looking towards the statement, which shows its importance. Also this statement will create a lot of questions for the viewer which will make them want to watch the film.

The second part of the poster I have picked out is the image of the location, which gives the audience the idea of a spooky and dark setting. Therefore adding to the idea of a thriller and suspense. The way in which the location has been lit makes it appear as if it has been spotlighted which makes it stand out from the background. Also the rain that they have used across the poster makes the other images look a bit distorted, adding to the mystery of the genre. The location appears quite slanted and unusual which adds to the strange and confusion associated with thrillers.

The next part that I have removed from the poster is simply, the actors name and the title of the film. The name is of the main star in the film and the actor who plays this character, also the character in the poster itself. The font is quite simple and bold so that is illegible to many different audiences. The name is written in a simple white so that it contrasts from the dark background, making it stand out. Also so that it does not take away to much attention from the title, which is the main thing to remember from the poster. The title is in a bright red to make it stand out from the background, also to represent the idea of danger as red is often associated with this. Also there is an effect in the font which makes the font look a bit edgy, making it link with the genre. However even though the effect and colour is different the style is the same to the rest of the text, this is to add a consistency to the poster.

Finally right at the bottom of the poster is a list of words that appear a bit blurred, showing that these are least important as they do not stand out.  This list includes other actors that are in the film and other people who were important in creating the film. Also beneath this list is a selection of logo’s and corporations to show who helped with the creation and production of the film. Also there is the word ‘October’ written in the centre this, this is because the viewer will normally look to the centre of the page. Also the ‘October’ is written larger to make it stand out and written in red to link with the rest of the poster.

Overall the poster is quite striking and represents the genre well. The dark colours and bold writing, really link to the darkness and mystery of a thriller. Also the expression of confusion in the main characters face links to the idea of it being a psychological thriller. Another positive is it shows how it links to the film trailer as in the trailer it uses similar shots of the character and location.
